SEAN 'STYX' NUNAN

           Professional Drummer & Educator

EARLY YEARS - JOHANNESBURG 1988 - 1999

Sean started drumming at the age of 17 and turned professional in 1988 with a band called Shout! Shout was a 5-piece pop / rock original outfit that mainly played at major festivals and varsity campus gigs around the country. The band released an EP called Guns & Games and three singles namely 'Don't Dance' ‘Where did the Feeling Go’ and 'Reaching Out' had chart success on SA's 5fm. The band also appeared on SABC's popular music video show 'Fast Forward'. The highlight of the bands three years together was a 6-week national tour of South Africa together with the Celtic Rumours and the Psycho Reptiles.

After Shout split up at the end of 1990 Sean joined a cover band called Shy Moon. A couple of month's later Sean and guitarist Kevin Reed were approached by Brian O Shea (Musketeer Records) to join Shifty Henry. Sean spent 3 very successful years with Shifty Henry, touring both locally and internationally, gigging on average 5 nights per week and enjoyed major chart successes as well as widespread radio and television coverage in the form of music videos interviews and personal appearances.

When Shifty Henry finally parted ways, Sean and Kevin formed the ever-popular Johannesburg cover band 'Avalanche'. Sean spent 5 years as drummer for the band before moving to Cape Town in 2000 to concentrate on teaching and fulfill his passion to become a better all round drummer.

In 1997 Sean also performed in a show called 'Disco Inferno' which was a tribute to the seventies disco era featuring Samantha Peo (Chicago), Neil Paich and Helen Du Boir. After a successful season, which took the show around the country as well as to Namibia and Botswana, Sean re-united with Craig Parsons from Shy Moon in another cover band called 'Scandal'.

CAPE TOWN 2000 - To Present

2002 saw Sean joining the original 'chick rock" band Natti Simonne and played with them for 3 years in and around Cape Town, before forming his own corporate cover show band Almost Famous in 2006.

Another fabulous performer and 1st class vocalist that Sean enjoys working with is Gospel recording artist Rouchelle Liedemann www.rouchelleliedermann.co.za.

Sean is also an in demand session drummer and has performed on various albums and jingles. ' I think my strengths as a drummer are the fact that number one I grew up playing to a click track, which has helped me get a lot of regular studio work, and I am also passionate about all aspects of our art form. I am eager to learn, YouTube and Google are my best friends. I love practicing as well as performing and I want to see all SA drummers succeed. Drumming to me is Journey and not a Destination, and the longer you play the harder it gets! (How Cool and Frustrating is that!) I am also a Gear Junkie'. Sean has also become involved in doings clinics and workshops and was recently invited to perform at the 1st annual SA Drum Day in Johannesburg alongside Russ Miller, which was featured on Morning Live SABC. A DVD of the event is available at leading music stores. Sean is also a regular guest speaker and MC at various industry events.
